A specialized operation of Sofia's Transport Police unit has revealed widespread violations of Road Traffic Act provisions among taxi drivers.

The idea for the operation came after a meeting between representatives of the major taxi companies and senior officials of the Sofia Police Directorate.

Out of the 6450 taxi drivers inspected, 102 had had their driver's license suspended due to the loss of control points.

Another 64 taxi drivers lacked the mandatory Civil Liability insurance.

A total of 34 of the taxi drivers inspected had had their driver's license suspended due to alcohol abuse, while 52 had been issued numerous statements of offence for which they were about to be stripped of their driver's license.

9 drivers lacked capacity certificates and 146 drivers had an expired driver's license.

1200 taxi drivers are to be issued penalty statements and 160 of them will have to appear in person at the Traffic Police headquarters in Sofia.

Some 30 smaller taxi companies said they were willing to cooperate and provided data for their employees who will be checked thorough the same procedure.

The operation also showed that 930 of the taxi drivers inspected had not paid their traffic violation fines.

The Interior Ministry has vowed in a statement that all offenders will be promptly penalized.
