Socialists: GERB Makes Bulgaria Home to Ugly Records

Over 5,000 supporters of the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party have assembled on a Day of Rage rally against the cabinet of center-right GERB party Tuesday.

The Socialists have used May 1, International Labor Day, to express their protest against what they see as wrong and misguided policies of the government of PM Boyko Borisov.

"PM Borisov is making Bulgaria the country holding the most dismal records - lowest wages, lowest GDP, lowest spending for health and education," stated BSP Sofia organization chair Rumen Ovcharov, who opened the rally.

"In case that Borisov is not ousted for power, there is no future for Bulgaria. And only the Bulgarian Socialist Party can rid us of his cabinet," stated BSP and PES chair Sergey Stanishev in his address.

The socialist leader also recalled what he termed an inconsistent  and economically incompetent policy on the part of the cabinet.

"During our nationwide congress on May 20, we will make the strongest pledge to persist in that fight against GERB," added Stanishev.

During the congress, Stanishev will be facing re-election, against former socialist leader and Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov (2002-12), who is also at the protest in Sofia.

Tuesday socialist supporters assembled in front of the House of Parliament, and let out in the air balloons with the faces of leading GERB politicians, signaling their desire to see them go.

The rally then headed to the Borisova Gradina park, as is traditional for socialist May 1 rallies in Sofia.
