The Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) will stage a protest against "the policy of robbing the people" pursued by center-right ruling party GERB on May 1, the International Workers' Day, according to BSP leader Sergey Stanishev.

"We are not the only ones to feel angry. There are many people in Bulgaria who feel angry due to the state of the country, the way they live and the huge unemployment," Stanishev said Monday in an interview for the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR).

The socialist leader explained that the unemployment rate had nearly doubled, from 6.6% in February 2009 to the current 12.4%.

He said that the alarming phenomenon was even more significant because the state was doing nothing to remedy it.

Stanishev insisted that the grey economy was being patronized and had grown to 40% of the GDP.

He added that social benefits were being taken away from people, thereby depriving them of hope and perspective.

The BSP leader noted that laws were being amended to sidestep the payment of social benefits.

"The BSP is a negation of the model that is being imposed by GERB. We are a negation of this police state situation, this model of oligarchic capitalism that is being developed. We shall never give up on some key policies and principles, regardless of the conditions," Stanishev declared.
