10 Families to Get New Homes in Flood-Hit Bulgarian Village

The construction of the first batch of ten houses in the flood-hit southern Bulgarian village of Biser will start Thursday.

The construction costs amount to BGN 74 000 per house of 108 square meters and will be supplied from the donations raised during the charity campaign of the Bulgarian Red Cross.

The price does not include the concrete and armatures, which have been donated separately, according to Haskovo Mayor Irena Uzunova, as cited by private TV station bTV.

The donated projects for the new houses, which have been approved by the local administration, envisage conventional monolithic construction.

The houses are to be built in three months' time.

The donated sum was initially supposed to cover the construction of 57 houses, but it turned out that it would only be enough for 10.

Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov and Hristo Grigorov, Chair of the Bulgarian Red Cross, will turn the first shod on Thursday.

The families that will get new houses have been selected as the ones with the most urgent needs and are now sleeping in improvised dwellings or homes of relatives.

On February 06, the village of Biser, Harmanli municipality, was hit by massive flooding after the wall of the Ivanovo dam collapsed.

The accident killed 10 and the government declared February 08 a day of mourning over the tragic deaths.
