Bulgaria to Boost Energy Efficiency of Public Transport

A program called "Energy Efficiency and Green Economy" that was presented Wednesday at the Ministry of Transport envisages increasing the number of trolleybuses in big cities and introducing hybrid buses and 100% electric buses.

Transport Minister Ivaylo Moskovski expressed the state's support for other initiatives like boosting the energy efficiency of public transport by improving the vehicle fleet, by using cleaner vehicles, including "green" electric taxis, and by more eco-driving.

A working group consisting of representatives of a number of ministries called for introducing incentives for owners and producers of electric vehicles and the construction of the necessary infrastructure.

To illustrate his point with an example of an environmentally-friendly and energy efficient means of public transport, Moskovski cited the Sofia underground.

He noted that preventing increases in the energy intensity of transport and reducing its impact on climate change required collective and coordinated efforts.
