Ex EU Commissioner: Bulgaria's Rulers, Opposition in Backstage Deal

Bulgaria's rulers from the center-right party GERB and their supposed opposition operate in agreement, according to ex EU Commissioner and aspiring political leader Meglena Kuneva.

Kuneva, who is the leader of the Bulgaria for the Citizens movement, a formation widely expected to be transformed into a political party before the 2013 parliamentary elections, criticized both the Borisov Cabinet and the various opposition formations on Sunday, as cited by Cross.

In her words, the no confidence vote that the Bulgarian Socialist Party tried to initiate but failed after it was abandoned by the other opposition parties is a clear indication of the backstage deals of the government and their supposed opponents.

"What we are actually witnessing is a coalition between the government and the opposition but it is a covert and dishonest one. All is fake, as we saw in the case with Lukoil Bulgaria, in which the government first revoked their license, and then handed them a public procurement contract for dozens of millions in order to fill up the state reserve with fuel that was purchased at the highest price possible," Kuneva argued.

She further accused the Borisov Cabinet and his party GERB of exerting severe pressure on the state administration in order to use it for their party interests.

"If you are close to the rulers, you will get an appointment, and they are doing all that recklessly, without even thinking they will suffer form the appointment of an incompetent person. The greatest problems that people all over the country alert us about are that the public procurement tenders are unfair, the business sector has been crushed, the unemployment is devastating entire regions, and health care and education are at a very low level," stated the ex EU Commissioner, who was ranked third in Bulgaria's 2011 presidential elections with 400 000 votes, or about 14% of the total votes cast.

She further slammed the ruling party and the government for conducting policies "over the TV set".
