Sofia's heating company announced it has decided to start shutting down the central heating in the capital as of April 23, Monday.

The law states that the heating season starts October 1 and ends April 30. But after a few warm days and with forecasts for temperatures over 12 degrees Celsius from now on, the company can allow itself to stop the heating a tad earlier.

Kindergartens and hospitals, however, will not be left in the cold yet.

Tenants and residents of apartment buildings, who wish to have the heat on after that date, have to submit an application with signatures by all owners.

This is done in order to prevent keeping on the heat on individual requests without the knowledge and the agreement of other people in the same building.

"Toplofikatsiya Sofia" clients have been forced to dig deeper into their pockets every year to pay for the comfort of having a warm and cozy home.

The company, which has been in the news for more than four years after it was found drained to the brink of bankruptcy, provides heating to about 400,000 households in the capital Sofia.
