Left-wing Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and far-right VMRO will engage in common actions as both formations struggle to revive the abandoned Belene Nuclear Power Plant project.

Representatives of the two parties met on Friday and discussed their plan to launch a petition calling for a referendum that would decide Belene's fate.

"It is an interesting thing that we always join forces with VMRO in difficult moments, when vital decisions are been taken," BSP leader Sergey Stanishev commented, reminding that the two parties cooperated in fighting against the closure of the 3rd and 4th unit of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant prior to the country's EU entry.

"And now that irresponsible and anti-national decision gathers us again," he added as cited by the Focus news agency.

BSP already submitted a no-confidence motion against the ruling centrist-right GERB together with another far-right party, Ataka. On Thursday, however, Ataka decided to withdraw its support for the no-confidence motion that was the result of the government's decision to drop Belene.

Unlike Ataka, VMRO is not represented in the Bulgarian Parliament.
