Speaking after a Thursday meeting with Moldovan Prime Minister Vladimir Filat, Boyko Borisov yet again emphasized the importance of gas grid interconnection projects for energy security.

"I hope that we shall be able to achieve the much desired diversification in the region with the support of the European Commission (EC)," the Bulgarian Prime Minister stated at a joint press conference with his Moldovan counterpart.

Filat arrived Thursday on an official visit to Bulgaria.

"We shall turn the first sod in May and the construction of the gas grid interconnection with Romania will start. Technically, the gas link that is being built between Moldova and Romania will bind us into one system and, naturally, we expect a lot," Borisov noted.

"Vladimir is a very good friend of Mr. Aliyev, the President of Azerbaijan, so we are all working very actively with the EC on the Turkey-Bulgaria gas grid interconnection," the Bulgarian Prime Minister added.

Borisov is to pay an official visit to Azerbaijan by the end of April.

The Bulgarian Prime Minister further told journalists that Economy and Energy Minister Delyan Dobrev was in Denmark where he would discuss, among other things, the Southern Gas Corridor project with EU Energy Commissioner G?nther Oettinger.
