Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov has proposed to his UK counterpart William Hague joint projects for cooperation in the Balkans, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry announced.

"We should work together so that, at the upcoming NATO Summit in Chicago, we send a positive signal to the Balkans. We shall pay particular attention to Bosnia and Herzegovina, which should be given an Action Plan for NATO membership," Mladenov stated during talks with the British Foreign Secretary William Hague.

Bulgaria's Foreign Minister Mladenov, who was in the UK on a two-day, proposed to Hague the implementation of joint projects in the Balkans that would contribute to the promotion of European and Euro-Atlantic integration, the Ministry said, without specifying the nature of the projects.

The two ministers discussed the deteriorating situation in Syria and possible ways out of the crisis, with Mladenov declaring that the international community must strengthen its support for the opposition while continuing efforts in accordance with the Kofi Annan Plan.

Bulgaria's Foreign Minister drew attention to the situation of the Kurds in the border regions of Syria and their inclusion in the ranks of the opposition, as cited by the Foreign Ministry in Sofia.

During his visit to the UK, Mladenov held talks with European Affairs Minister David Lidington. They discussed the outcome of the meeting in Sofia last month on issues of growth. Minister Mladenov emphasized innovation, energy efficiency and e-government.

He also participated in a seminar organized by the European Council on Foreign Relations, dedicated to the crisis in Syria and its impact in the region.
