Bulgarian Village Marks Titanic Centenary

The citizens of the Northern Bulgarian village of Gumoshtnik mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of iconic passenger liner Titanic on Sunday.

Eight people from Gumoshtnik perished on the night of April 14 1912 as the largest passenger liner of the day hit an iceberg.

Officially, a total of 38 Bulgarians died in the disaster, even though their number may be higher, according to some researchers. Approximately 15 Bulgarian nationals survived the sinking, most of whom settled in the US for good.

Most of the victims and the survivors were from Northern-central Bulgaria, where Gumoshtnik is located.

On Sunday, a commemorative plaque will be officially presented in the village to mark the tragic anniversary.

Folklore song "Pusta da ostane taz Amerika!" ("Damn You, America!") will be performed on the occasion, dnevnik.bg informs. The song laments the fate of the local young men who lost their lives on board the Titanic while looking for a better live abroad.

A short documentary on Titanic will be shown in the local school.
