The mass fighting which claimed one life in Bulgaria late Friday was between local ethnic Bulgarian villagers and Roma workers from another settlement, it was revealed Saturday.

In the fight which erupted in the village of Pravishte, a 45-year-old man from Plovdiv perished, after trying to appease the two warring groups.

He and his brother were visiting their parents at their village home, when they heard the fight and tried to intervene.

One of the brothers was hit with an axe and knife and died on the way to hospital; the other is hospitalized with a head injury.

According to local witnesses quoted by Dnes.bg, the fight erupted following a build up of tensions between the locals and the visiting workers, who are of Roma origin.

Some of the Pravishte villagers have said they have been threatened by the workers, who come from the nearby village of Rozino.

At any rate, it was the locals who attacked the residence of the Roma workers, thus directly provoking the bloody brawl itself.

Police have detained as many as 12 people as a result of the fight and killing, and are still deployed in heavy numbers in Pravishte.
