Romanian Plunderers Roam Serbian Highways - Police

Organized gangs from Romania are responsible for a number of robberies reported on Serbia's E-75 highway, according to reports by Serbian police.

During the last two weeks, Serbian law enforcement officers have uncovered several organized criminal groups from Serbia's north-eastern neighbor, writes local newspaper Blic, as quoted by the Bulgarian News Agency.

The gangs operated between Hogros north of Belgrade and Jagodina south of the Serbian capital, on the E-75, which links Hungary with Macedonia passing through the length of Serbia, including Belgrade.

The chief target of the criminal gangs are older people travelling alone, according to Serbian police reports.

Criminals exploit those people's vulnerablity and simply extort their documents and money, comment police sources.

In another scheme, criminals defraud drivers by purporting to sell gold jewelry for small amounts of money, which jewelry after the deal turns out to be trickets painted in gold.

Serbia's transport police have also warned about the possible emergence of seasonal swindlers whose primary target is foreigners driving through the country.
