8.2 Aftershock Jolts Sumatra

An aftershock with a preliminary magnitude of 8.2 shook Sumatra's western coast, promting Indonesian authorities to issue a fresh tsunami warning, according to international media.

Hours earlier, an 8.7 magnitude earthquake struck about 500 kilometers from Indonesia's Aceh province.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami alert for the entire Indian Ocean. A total of 28 countries were warned.

A later alert said that sea level readings indicated a tsunami was generated and that it "may already have been destructive along some coasts".

A tsunami watch is still in effect for Indonesia, India, Australia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Maldives, the UK, Malaysia, Mauritius,Reunion, Seychelles, Oman, Pakistan, Somalia, Madagascar, Iran, UAE, Yemen, Comoros, Mozambique, Kenya,Tanzania,Crozet Islands, Bangladesh, Kerguelen Islands, South Africa and Singapore.
