Bulgaria Ruling Party to Propose No-Confidence Vote on April 23

Iskra Fidosova, Deputy Chair of the parliamentary group of center-right ruling party GERB, has said that the formation will propose holding the no-confidence motion against the government on April 23, right after the spring holiday.

Under Bulgarian law, the no-confidence motion is to be put to the vote no later than 7 days after its submission, which in the most recent case happened on April 6.

Fidosova explained on Tuesday that the Easter parliamentary recess (April 13-22) interrupted the statutory timeframe.

She told journalists that she had no worries that the no-confidence motion would pass because it had too few supporters.

Fidosova further noted that the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and nationalist party Ataka were set to establish "a new and pretty weird coalition."

She added that GERB MPs would propose holding a discussion and a second-reading vote on the illegal assets bill in the first week after the Easter break.

On April 6, the Ataka party and an independent MP, Georgi Terziyski, introduced a no-confidence motion against the Borisov Cabinet over the suspension of the Belene NPP project.

The motion was signed by 48 MPs.

The opposition-minded MPs argued that the cancellation of the project and the decision to build a gas power central in its place was a threat to national security and would substantially increase Bulgaria's on Russia for gas supplies.

On Tuesday, the right-wing Blue Coalition announced that it would vote against the no-confidence motion initiated by the socialists and the nationalist party.
