A law enforcement officer and a militant have been killed in an armed clash during an operation against a Wahhabi Islamist group in the northwestern Azerbaijani city of Ganja.

One law enforcement officer was killed and three wounded in an armed clash with members of an illegal armed group in Ganja, the Trend News Agency reported on Friday, citing law enforcement agencies.

One militant was killed and two were wounded in the clash that was the result of an operation to eliminate a militant group, city police said.

The Turan news agency reported that the operation was against a group of adherents to the Wahhabi branch of Islam, one of whom apparently blew himself up.

The National Security Ministry of Azerbaijan has confirmed a special operation was being conducted in Ganja.
