Bulgarian Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, firmly rejects claims that there is an escalation of contract murders in the country.

Bulgarian authorities are currently involved in a large-scale cocaine bust operation, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov.

Speaking in an interview for the Bulgarian National Radio, BNR, Thursday, Tsvetanov announced that the international operation concerns over 1 metric ton of the illegal drug and that a Bulgaria national is involved in the major drug trafficking scheme.

On the topic of notorious Bulgarian prostitution rings abroad, the Minister told how one prostitute in the Netherlands has earned over EUR 4 M for her pimp. The girl had been taken out of Bulgaria 8 years ago, and subjected to beatings and sexual abuse.

Tsvetanov firmly rejected claims that there is an escalation of contract murders in the country.

Commenting on the Wednesday murder of Blagoevgrad businessman Yordan Dinov in downtown Sofia, he said that the fact the victim had EUR 5 000 and BGN 32 000 in cash on him early in the morning while heading to a meeting with the former Blagoevgrad Mayor, Konstantin Paskalev, spoke volumes about him and the possible nature of the meeting.

Regarding the other murder, of Kiril Kirilov AKA Shkafa (The Commode), Tsvetanov pointed out that the latter had been part of the kidnap gang nicknamed The Impudent and if he was kept behind bars instead of being let walk free, he would have lived to hear his guilty verdict in Court.

The Minister admitted petty crime in Bulgaria is a problem, but said it could be solved, stressing that legislative changes are a must in order to do so.
