Half of publications in Bulgarian media treating the Roma minority present its members negatively, according to a media survey revealed Tuesday.

Of 743 publications reviewed, only 15 have expressed a positive attitude towards Roma, revealed journalist and media expert Ivo Indzhev from the Institute for Modern Politics.

"In abidance with their Ethical Code, Bulgarian media should write about the minority's problems and give a tribune to its representatives. Regrettably, that is not the case," said Indzhev at a press conference.

"To the contrary, Bulgarian media present Roma more often than not as scammers and criminals of various sorts," added he.

"Every second article misrepresents the Roma community as public enemy number one," lamented Indzhev.

The Institute for Modern Politics study has been conducted July-November 2011 over a string of printed publications in Bulgaria.
