A 88-year man, who was rushed to hospital in critical condition after being mauled by a pack of stray dogs in a Sofia district, is still being kept in an awake coma, but hopes that his life is out of danger are rising.

Boteo Tachkov, a renowned economist, was brutally attacked by a large pack of stray dogs in the Malinova Dolina quarter in the Bulgarian capital at the end of last month.

The man was taking his usual afternoon stroll outside the residential block he lives in when the dogs turned on him.

Doctors at the Military Medical Hospital in Sofia say the main factor threatening the man's life is his age, as well as the likelihood of cardiac problems.

The patient's left foot and ears have been almost completely ravaged by the stray dogs, he has deep lacerations on the legs.

The eyes of the professor have been injured badly but doctors refuse to make any forecasts.
