The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the Science Council of Japan signed a scientific cooperation agreement in Sofia on Friday.

The agreement signed by BAS chair Nikola Sabotinov and SCJ president Tkashi Onishi aims at boosting the bilateral scientific cooperation in the fields of fundamental and applied sciences, as well as humanitarian and social sciences.

Energy efficiency and energy resources, nanosciences, new materials and technologies and biomedicine are among the fields in which the two institutions will cooperate.

"The agreement signed today by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the Science Council of Japan is an extraordinary recognition for BAS as an international scientific center. This agreement will pave the way towards future joint projects with the strongest Japanese scientific organization, which will increase the cooperation between Bulgarian and Japanese scientists," Sabotinov declared on Friday.

Onishi revealed that SCJ has already picked some areas for future cooperation and joint projects.

A working meeting was held between Sabotinov, Onishi and Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev.
