The left-wing Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) has said it is starting consultations with opposition parties and independent MPs on a no-confidence motion against the GERB government.

The reasons behind the no-confidence vote are GERB's alleged failures in Bulgaria's energy and economic policy.

The motives were presented in Parliament on Friday by Petar Dimitrov, Deputy Chair of the Parliamentary Group of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and former Energy and Economy Minister.

The left-wing party insists on the urgent publication of the report of the consultant on the Belene NPP project and a re-vote on the decision for the suspension of the scheme on the basis of the conclusions and the recommendations included in the analysis of British HSBC.

Last but not least, the socialists call for staging a referendum on the fate of the Belene NPP.

"Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and GERB looted the Belene NPP," Dimitrov stated.

The socialist MP argued that the center-right ruling party GERB, the right-wing Blue Coalition and independent MPs were to blame for Bulgaria's "nuclear capitulation."

He reiterated BSP's stance that the withdrawal from the project for the construction of a second nuclear power plant would have fatal consequences for Bulgaria.

Dimitrov insisted that Bulgarian consumers would pay the price for the "irresponsible decision" because the country would face the need to import electricity at tariffs that a majority of Bulgarians would find unbearable.

Turning to the "Russophobic opposition", Dimitrov asked what it was that they were enjoying most - Bulgaria's growing energy dependence on Gazprom, the soaring prices of electricity and central heating or the real danger of Bulgaria changing sides from an exporter to an importer of electricity.

Regarding the plans of the government to transfer the already assembled reactor as a seventh unit at the Kozloduy NPP, the left-wing MP commented that the facility would still be Russian, regardless of its location, and that it would not grow younger or more reliable in 15 years' time, by when it is expected to become operational at the Kozloduy NPP.
