Sofia to Phase Out 300 Illegal Base Stations of Mobile Operators

Some 300 illegal base stations of mobile operators in Sofia will be phased out.

The inspection of the base stations was carried out by the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works on a tip-off from the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office.

The ban on the exploitations of the facilities means a gradual power supply cut-off according to a schedule.

"This schedule is to be compiled by the mobile operators and to be submitted with the respective units of the Regional Development Ministry by March 31 so as to prevent a blackout of cell coverage," said Regional Development Minister Lilyana Pavlova in an interview, as cited by the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA).

Another 300 base stations are yet to be inspected.

The Sofia Municipality will present information to the Regional Development Ministry about the base stations with construction permits.

In Pavlova's words, if a base station has a construction permit but no exploitation permit, it cannot be considered illegal.

In such cases, the procedures for the launch of the facilities need to be completed.

A few days ago, Pavlova announced that there were a total of 593 illegal base stations of mobile operators across the country.

She called on Bulgarian cell phone operators to continue the expansion of their networks only through legally permitted activities.
