Bulgarian national footballer Stiliyan Petrov, who has for long captained UK's Aston Villa, might part ways with the team due to its financial troubles, according to reports.

British sources quoted by Bulgarian media say that Petrov might quit Aston Villa after the summer, since the team's owners want to reduce his pay.

Villa's manager Alex McLeish has insisted that the Bulgarian's contract be extended beyond the summer, but reportedly owners were not ready to pay the same amount.

Midfielder Petrov, who transferred to the Birmingham team in 2006 after a strong carreer in Scotland's Celtic, has been Aston Villa's captain since 2009.

Of late, Villa's president Randy Lerner has announced plans to significantly curb the club's spending, which is set to involve shedding many key players.
