The Syrian government has agreed to the UN and Arab League plan for a ceasefire, said special envoy Kofi Annan.

During a visit to Beijing on which he met Chinese PM Wen Jiabao, the former UN Secretary Gerneral said that he received a positive answer from Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad's government.

At the same time, Annan admitted that the task for achieving peace in Syria is very hard and cannot be fulfilled by short-term measures only.

"We had very good discussions about Syria, and China offered their full support. They will work with me and the other members of the UN Security Council to ensure the implementation of the peace plan," said he.

Before China, Annan paid a visit to Russia, to ensure their support of the peace plan. The plans involves no calls for resignation of President Assad, which the two great powers opposed.

The UN and Arab League peace plan includes political discussions, withdrawal of heavy weaponry from city centers, unhindered access to humanitarian help, freeing of political prisoners, freedom of movement, and free access to journalists.

Meanwhile, units of the Syrian army made a foray into Lebanon, where anti-regime rebels have sought cover.

A Syrian opposition coordiation meeting is taking place in neighboring Turkey, which Monday broke diplomatic relations with Syria.
