Only 9% of the "non-financial" companies in Bulgaria use energy from renewable sources, a survey of the Economic Research Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences has found.

At the same time, the study funded by EU Operational Program "Development of Human Resources" has found that Bulgarian enterprises that do use renewable energy utilize it from a small range of sources that is limited to solar power, biomass, and biofuels.

These are primarily firms working in the field of trade and services, the BAS Economic Research Institute has found.

Of those Bulgarian companies using renewable energy 41% use renewable energy for transport, 19% for industrial production, and 11% for hotel and restaurant services.

The study has also covered the attitudes of Bulgarian households towards the use of alternative energy sources, and has found that the most widely used RES in Bulgaria by the general population are biomass, solar energy, and agricultural and forestry waste.

The scientists have estimated that given the right incentives by the government Bulgarian enterprises could invest up to BGN 700 M in renewable energy consumption over the next 5 years.
