Bulgaria must change its attitude towards fellow citizens living abroad and needs to fully revamp its strategy in dealing with them.

The opinion was voiced Thursday by the country's Vice President and former Justice Minister, Margarita Popova.

Popova stated that the foundations of relations with Bulgarian expats must include the views of the latter for the development of their homeland, for their own contributions, and ways to turn them into promoters of Bulgaria across the globe.

She stressed on the need to help Bulgarians abroad to expand their initiatives and motivate them to return home and work for their own country.

"First and foremost, we must learn more about the Bulgarian Diaspora because our emigrants are from different generations, have left over various reasons, and have integrated in their new countries in many different ways," the Vice-President pointed out.

Another major focus in the new strategy will include the opening of more Bulgarian schools abroad.

Popova spoke during her visit to Bulgaria's old capital - the central city of Veliko Tarnovo, where she took part in the celebrations of the day of the city.

"Veliko Tarnovo was and is one of the greatest symbols of Bulgarian spirit and strive for freedom," said she.
