Bulgarian coach Krassimir Balakov will officially take the helm at troubled German team Kaiserslautern on Thursday.

He will be presented to the German media as the new coach of the club at a press conference at 15.30 Bulgarian time.

Balakov will sign a contract that binds him with the club until the end of 2013, with an option for a one-year extension.

The former Bulgaria international was previously coaching Croatian side Hajduk Split. His contract there had to expire in 2013, but it will be terminated in advance by mutual consent.

"There are no guarantees in the football world. I accepted Kaiserslautern offer because I believe that everything will be ok. I believe the club can improve its performance," Balakov commented.

The Bulgarian coach is taking with him in Kaiserslautern his assistants Ilia Gruev and Yoncho Arsov, but admits that one day he may return to Hajduk.

"I may come back as a coach of the club one day. It would be nice. You never know."

As a player, Balakov had quite a successful career in Germany. He played for VfB Stuttgart where he won two UEFA Intertoto Cups (2000 and 2002) and a DFB-Pokal (1997), before retiring in 2003.

Kaiserslautern fired coach Marco Kurz on Tuesday as a result of a winless run that stretches back to October and sees the club languish at the foot of the Bundesliga table, with 20 points from 26 matches.
