CEO: Belene Reactor Can Be Used at Bulgaria's Kozloduy NPP

The first of the Russian-made nuclear reactors slated for the future Bulgarian Belene nuclear power plant can be installed at the existing Kozloduy NPP.

The statement was made by the Kozloduy CEO, Alexander Nikolov, speaking Tuesday in an interview for the State TV BNT, saying it was possible to add more reactors at the site of the NPP.

The CEO further explained that preparations would take 3 to 6 years, while the first energy from the new reactor will be produced in 12 years.

On Friday, Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, declared the second NPP will not be solely a project of Bulgaria and Russia and explained that there was an option to install at the existing Kozloduy NPP the first of the Russian-made nuclear reactors slated for Belene, for which Bulgaria has already paid two-thirds of the price.

Borisov's words were interpreted Monday by US Ambassador in Sofia, James Warlick, as a certain sign Bulgaria is firmly giving up on building a second NPP.

Over the weekend, Russia's Atomstroyexport announced in has assembled the reactor for the first block of the NPP to be built in the Bulgarian Danube town of Belene.
