Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borisov plans to take Finance Minister Simeon Djankov on an egg shopping tour in order to figure out the country's egg market dynamics.

The move has been triggered by the recent drastic egg price hike in Bulgaria that saw prices skyrocket to over EUR 0.20 per egg at some places in the course of just several days.

"We'll get on the car and while we are traveling, we'll say 'Stop at this shop.' I'll enter the shop and I'll see what the price is," the Prime Minister said during the latest cabinet meeting. He revealed that his plan consists of visiting three shops – a small, a medium-sized and a large one.

Borisov threatened that if he finds out that producers increase prices artificially ahead of Easter, their grants will be cut.

Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov added that it was crucial to determine whether the recent price hike is caused by producers or dealers, to which the Prime Minister agreed.

Lamb and pork prices started increasing several weeks ahead of the Orthodox Easter Sunday (which is April 15 in 2012), prompting Prime Minister Boyko Borisov to demand an immediate analysis from several of his Ministers.

It was made clear last week that Poland may increase its exports of eggs to Bulgaria, thus normalizing the market in the country after its recent shocking egg price hike.
