US Soldier Murders 16 Civilians in Afghanistan, Detained

An American soldier has been detained by international forces in Afghanistan Sunday morning, in an incident involving opening fire on civilians.

It later turned out that the US soldier had shot at and killed at least fifteen civilian persons, report world agencies.

The number of killed and injured in the incident is still being confirmed. NATO said the tragic episode happened in the Afghani province of Kandahar.

According to initial reports, the US solidier just walked out from his base and entered into private houses, where he opened fire on inhabitants.

In one of them he fell upon a gathering of 11 people, at which he shot. According to eyewitness accounts, the soldier walked into 3 houses before being stopped.

US Gen. John R. Allen, commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan, described the event as "appalling" and assured the perpetrator will be severely punished.
