Bulgaria's former European Commissioner Meglena Kuneva has discontinued membership in her party, the liberal National Movement for Stability and Prosperity.

"This was a hard personal decision after a long reflection of my personal motives and the current needs of society," says Kuneva in a press conference organized by her Bulgaria for Citizens movement.

Kuneva founded the movement at the end of 2011, provoking speculations she might go on and found a new political party to compete in general elections 2013.

The former EU Commissioner, who held the consumer rights portfolio in the first Barroso college, re-entered Bulgarian politics in 2011 for the October presidential race.

Without being supported by a party, Kuneva came out a solid third with 14% of the vote, behind winner Rosen Plevneliev from ruling center-right GERB and main opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party candidate Ivaylo Kalfin.

"At the present moment, there is no party in Bulgaria to stand up as an alternative to the existing political cartel. Today those in power and those in opposition are just the two sides of one coin," said Kuneva in her statement Sunday.

She further thanked the leaders of the National Movement for Stability and Prosperity for their past co-operation, and hoped they would continue working together in the future.

Kuneva also reiterated her earlier position that the Bulgaria for Citizens movement could morph into a new political party, but only if there is a real need for that in Bulgarian political life.

Meglena Kuneva entered Bulgarian politics in 2001 when former Bulgarian monarch, Simeon Saxe-Coburg founded the Movement and swept to power in general elections.

Since then, Kuneva has served as Bulgaria's chief negotiator for EU accession, Bulgaria's Minister of European Affairs, and then European Commissioner.
