Israel Should Invest More in Bulgaria, Plevneliev Tells Lieberman

Israel has the potential to boost its foreign direct investment in Bulgaria, Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev has told Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman.

Lieberman arrived on a state visit in Sofia late Thursday night, and had talks with Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov on Friday.

"The rescue of Bulgarian Jews during World War II is a historical fact that characterizes the contemporary relations between Bulgaria and Israel," President Plevneliev stated Friday, according to the Presidency pres sservice.

He emphasized Bulgaria's interest in boosting business ties with Israel in IT and communications, biotechnology, pharmaceutical industry, and infrastructure.

Plevneliev reiterated earlier comments by Bulgarian Foreign Minister Mladenov that Bulgaria would be interested in importing natural gas from Israel's deposits in the Eastern Mediterranean as a means of diversifying the Bulgarian energy supplies.

The Bulgarian President also explained Bulgaria appreciated its cooperation with Israel in defense and security, and intends to develop and deepen it.

Israel's top diplomat Lieberman has presented Plevneliev with an invitation to visit Israel from Israeli President Shimon Peres.
