The Commission for Protection of Personal Data has fined Bulgaria's Foreign Affairs Ministry for making public nearly 37 000 permanent addresses in the country of Bulgarian voters residing abroad.
The internet leak outraged Bulgarian expats, who say this makes them an easy target for theft and robberies, and they now have to shell more cash for insurance and security for their Bulgarian homes.
In the aftermath, the Commission for Protection of Personal Data started the probe.
The fine is in the amount of BGN 2 500, far below the maximum fine of BGN 100 000, because the Ministry had not abused the data and the information had been available online for a short period of time – from 6 pm Saturday to 8 am Sunday.
