A women's World Cup downhill, which was due to be held on Saturday in Bulgaria's Bansko resort, has been cancelled due to strong winds.

The International Ski Federation jury decided that the launch should be postponed for Sunday after waiting for hours on end for the weather to improve.

The strong wind at the beginning of the track puts at risk the safety of the skiers, the jury said.

Fans were left with the consolation that they will have the chance to enjoy the super-G on Sunday.

Germany's Maria Hoefl-Riesch and overall World Cup leader Lindsey Vonn of the United States are the favorites in the race.

In both training sessions on Thursday and Friday, the German managed to stay ahead of her main rival.
