The Cuban boxing team, who will participate in the Strandzha Tournament in Bulgaria later this month, have set themselves the highest possible goal – to take home the gold medals.

"We are on track. Everyone knows we have chances for the Olympic gold and give great joy to our country," world champion Lazaro Alvarez told the Cuban News Agency.

"I'm in shape, working without problems for the Olympics, and I want to start the year with the title in this event [in Bulgaria]."

"It will be a competition with mostly European fighters, and that is very favorable for our purposes," said the boxer, selected as the best in America last year.

The Bulgarian event will be the competitive debut of the islanders for this Olympic year.

The team is headed by world champion boxers Baku Lazaro Alvarez (56 kg) and Julio Cesar Cruz (81), who have already qualified for the 2012 London games.

For the upcoming Bulgarian edition of the tournament, 63 competitors from 30 countries have confirmed their participation.
