The Bulgarian section of the Danube River completely froze over during the course of Friday night into Saturday.

The data was reported by the Bulgarian Agency for Study and Maintenance of the Danube River.

Saturday morning, the ice cover at the eastern Bulgarian Danube port of Silistra was 100% - the total freeze includes a 11-km-long section, from kilometer 386 to kilometer 375.

The freeze is 90% near Svishtov, Ruse and Tutrakan, 60% near Vidin and Nikopol, and 40% near Lom and Oryahovo.

The ice float is expected to expand further over the weekend.

The Bulgarian Maritime Administration Agency has banned all navigation in the Bulgaria section of the river. The ferries from Oryahovo, Vidin and Silistra to Romania are halted as well. Truck traffic there is diverted to the Danube Bridge in Ruse.
