Bulgaria PM Enraged over Former Govt's Project, Wants to Re-Open It

Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has once again expressed his frustration with the former government's so-called "Water Mirror" infrastructure project.

The project now costs a total of BGN 80 M, it has been made clear during the last Council of Ministers sitting. The sum has grown by over BGN 50 M since 2009 due to payment delays, Regional Development Minister Lilyana Pavlova informed.

"Water Mirror" is a water system project in the city of Kardzhali which was started by the former three-way coalition government. Since taking over in 2009, Borisov has criticized the project on numerous occasions, stating it is too expensive and that state budget money should have been used for better purposes.

During the latest Council of Ministers sitting, Borisov asked whether the former government officially opened the project, to which Minister Pavlova answered positively, adding that it still has no exploitation permit and has not been granted the so-called Act 16 certificate, which would confirm that the construction has been finished.

"How (was it opened) if it was not ready, not paid for and lacking an Act?" Borisov exclaimed.

"They wanted to rob us of the opportunity to open it. We will re-open it," he declared.
