US Embassy in Sofia Launches President's Day Youth Contest

The US Embassy in Sofia has issued a special press release to the media in announcing the 2012 student essay and art contest dedicated to Presidents' Day.

In the US, the third Monday in February is a federal holiday on which day Americans honor presidents of the United States. The holiday was originally called Washington's Birthday in honor of the first American president; Abraham Lincoln's birthday also falls in mid-February.

Participants in the essay contest must be enrolled high school or university, studying and residing in Bulgaria. Each participant can enter the contest with up to two works, thematically dedicated to one of the following areas: Presidential Elections, a letter you would send to President Plevneliev and/or President Obama, if you had the chance, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln.

Works should be created especially for the contest and must be in English.

Participants in the art contest must be students between 6 and 18 years old, studying and residing in Bulgaria. For evaluation purposes, the students will be divided by age into four groups. Each participant can enter the contest with up to two works, thematically dedicated to one of the following areas: a president at work, electing a president, something you would share with President Plevneliev and/or President Obama, if you had the chance.

Works should be created especially for the contest and can be of the following media: drawing, aquarelle, painting, graphic, poster, or photography.

Contestants should email their essays to the US Embassy in Sofia at Sofia_Essay@state.gov no later than Wednesday, February 29, 2012. The email must include the name, age, high school or university of the author, as well as a telephone number where the author can be reached.

Works will be reviewed by a group of judges, and winners will receive certificates and prizes. The winners will be announced on the Facebook page of the U.S. Embassy and on its website. All questions on the contest should be directed to Sofia_Essay@state.gov
