Romania is expected to name its new Prime Minister in the following days, as Emil Boc resigned from his post on Monday after his austerity measures resulted in mass protests.

President Traian Basescu is to nominate the Balkan EU newcomer's next Prime Minister within days, the Bulgarian BGNES news agency reports, citing international media.

On Monday, Basescu was expected to meet with representatives of the country's major political parties. The EU budget pact and the internal political situation in Romania are among the key topics expected to be discussed.

Basescu will most probably endorse a technocrat for Prime Minister, analyzers have commented.

Romanian Justice Minister Catalin Prudoiu has already been appointed by Basescu as the country's interim PM.

According to Romania's Adevarul daily, Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, head of the Romanian Foreign Intelligence Service, is tipped to replace Emil Boc.

Boc resigned earlier on Monday, stating that it was "the moment for important political decisions."

The Prime Minister had imposed a 25% cut in public sector wages and a freeze on pensions.

Romania had to turn to the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the European Union in 2009 for EUR 20 B.

The Romanian government took steps to rein in the budget deficit, which was 7.3% of the GDP in 2009. The deficit was cut to 6.9% in 2010 and an estimated 4.2% in 2011, and the economy began to grow again.
