Every 3rd Bulgarian Was Economically Inactive Q4 2011

A total of 1.672 million people, or 33.7% of all Bulgarians aged between 15 and 64, were economically inactive (neither employed of seeking a job) in the fourth quarter of 2011, it has emerged.

According to the country’s National Statistical Institute, a total of 3.28 million Bulgarians within the same age were economically active in the last quarter of the year, with 2.9 million working and 380 000 unemployed.

Bulgaria’s economically active population decreased by 0.3 percentage points year on year in the fourth quarter of 2011.

In comparison with the third quarter of 2011 the number of employed Bulgarians decreased by 62 100 and the employment rate for the population aged between 15 and 64 dropped by 1.2 percentage points.

An unemployment rate of 11.4% was registered in the last quarter of 2011, an increase by 0.2 percentage points year on year. Bulgaria's unemployment rate in December 2011 was 11.2%, according to Eurostat's latest data.
