Only a small part of Bulgaria's Roma population lives on social security, according to a survey conducted by Open Society.

Contrary to the widespread notion that Bulgarian Roma do not work because they rely on child benefits, just 4.3% of the Roma minority group in the country receive maternity benefits and child benefits for children under 1 year of age, the survey has concluded.

Some 13% of the Roma questioned receive winter heating assistance benefits, while 9.6% are paid unemployment benefits, Boyan Zahariev from Open Society has told the Bulgarian National Radio.

45% of Bulgaria's Roma do not have a health insurance, it has also been revealed.

According to the study, the Roma citizens in Bulgaria feel more discriminated against than 10 years ago.
