Bulgaria to Make National Intelligence Service Reshuffle

Bulgaria's new President Rosen Plevneliev has declared that a new Director and Deputy Director will be appointed in the country's National Intelligence Service.

"We discussed the candidates, we agreed on them, the Council of Ministers will decide," Plevneliev told the 24 Chasa daily after he met with Prime Minister Boyko Borisov. The names of the candidates have not been revealed yet.

Plevneliev believes that Bulgaria should have clear laws that define the work of its intelligence services by the end of 2012.

Commenting on the expected diplomatic reshuffle, he stated that a phased approach is to be adopted.

"We will work in phases. There will be a first, a second, and a third stage," the President said. He claimed that certain candidates for Ambassadors abroad have been discussed with the Prime Minister, but again refused to mention any names.

Bulgaria's Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov is expected to propose a major diplomatic reshuffle during Wednesday's cabinet sitting, with as many as 25 new Ambassadors abroad expected to be appointed.

Upon asked about one of the latest police brutality scandals, Plevneliev stated that he "will not comment on every single thing that happens in the country every day," while Borisov reiterated that the police officers who participated in the recent special operation against a family in Sofia abused their power.
