Police have apprehended a suspect in connection with the January 03 rape of a 23-year-old student near the campus of the New Bulgarian University (NBU) in Sofia.

The Interior Ministry will provide details on the case at a press conference later on Wednesday, according to an announcement of Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov.

The girl was raped as she was going out of the university building after late-evening lectures.

After the incident, NBU students staged protests to demand better lighting in the area and an increased police presence.

Tsvetanov announced Wednesday that the arrested was a suspect in several other offences.

At the end of last week, the Interior Minister rejected accusations that the case was being hushed up and explained that he had been "working with the victim" ever since the incident.

He emphasized that the actions of the police could not be given publicity.

Tsvetanov made it clear that NBU had signed a contract for security services with a company under which there were 11 guards working day shift, as well as a night shift.

He added that there was an increased police presence in the area.

Wednesday's press conference comes amid calls for Tsvetanov's resignation over a growing number of complaints of police brutality.
