Bulgaria's new President Rosen Plevneliev pledged to defend the country's national interest during his first political speech since being sworn in.

"I understand my own responsibility, as well as the responsibility of the institution. I will be the President of all Bulgarian citizens. I will defend the non-partisanship of the institutions. I will not forget the commitments I have taken and I will not be afraid to make new commitments," Plevneliev told the Bulgarian Parliament.

Plevneliev expressed his gratitude to the three democratically elected Bulgarian Presidents before him – Zhelyu Zhelev, Petar Stoyanov and Georgi Parvanov.

"You worked towards Bulgaria's successful transition towards becoming a modern democracy. You strived to establish the institution in Bulgaria and around the world. I am convinced that you will continue working with us to make Bulgaria a better place to live," he said.
