Outgoing President Georgi Parvanov, whose second term in office expires in a week, has said that he has engaged in numerous arguments with Prime Minister Borisov on issues of the past and the present, but the real ideological clash between them is yet to unfold.

In an interview published Friday by Standard daily, Parvanov explains that he was a successful leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and that he helped it out of rock bottom.

"Being a leader, however, does not necessarily mean being the person officially in charge," the outgoing head of state notes.

Invited to elaborate on his future agenda, Parvanov says that he has not met Ahmed Dogan, leader of the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) party anytime soon.

"But I have had my talks with him and a number of other leaders. I have always said it and I have always stuck by the principle that the doors of the President's Office and the Boyana residence should be open to those who have something to share or to discuss. The President must be open to everybody," he declares.

Asked whether he holds aspirations to become Prime Minister, Parvanov says that the rumor has started circulating due to a proneness to speculation that the media contracted from Bulgarian politics.

Stressing that it is too early to make comments on the next Prime Minister, Parvanov suggests that the next government may well be a coalition, given the current level of dispersion in the political space.

"My ambition is for Bulgaria to have a better, stronger, more competent and more open Prime Minister who will really be up to the hard tasks that the country will be facing from 2013 on," Parvanov shares.

The outgoing head of state suggests that Bulgaria will probably begin to emerge from the crisis at that point, but the period will be very tough because there will be a new strategic horizon, new goals and an unknown balance of powers in the EU.

"This means that there will be many unknowns, which makes it imperative that Bulgaria have a competent and strong Prime Minster," Parvanov concludes.
