Bulgaria Says It's Best in EU Online Census

Bulgaria carried out the most effective online census among all EU member states in 2011, the country's National Statistical Institute has stated in a report on its activities throughout the year.

A total of 41.2% of all Bulgarians who took part in the 2011 census did that on the Internet, the report says, pointing out that this is the highest percentage among the EU countries which had a census last year.

In 2011, Bulgaria carried out its first census according the EU rules and introduced the electronic census option for the first time in its history,

Bulgaria announced the results from its census in very short terms, becoming the first EU member state to do that in 2011, the National Statistical Institute has also noted.

The census that was conducted in Bulgaria between February 1 and February 28 showed that the country's population has decreased by over half million people (581 750) since 2001.

The number of people living  in the country is now 7 351 234. Of them nearly 73% (5 357 633) live in cities and towns and 27% (1 993 602) live in villages. From 1992 until 2011, the population went down by 773 784 over the negative natural growth while 410 472 emigrated.
