Bulgarian Teen Double Murderer Receives Guilty Verdict

The Regional Court in Bulgaria's southern city of Kardzhali issued Tuesday a guilty verdict for Dzhuneyt Shevket, 18, over the double murder of his mother and younger brother, who was 6 at the time.

The sentence calls for 7 years and 4 months behind bars, while Dzhuneyt will be jailed for 6 years and four months since he already served one year. The defendant also must pay the Court expenses in the amount of BGN 13 536. He was taken to the jail in the city of Stara Zagora.

The defense council explained he will wait to see the motives of the magistrate before deciding if he was going to file an appeal with the Plovdiv Court of Appeals.

The trail started Tuesday and concluded very quickly because the defendant made full confessions before the magistrates.

On January 22, Bulgarian police uncovered the murder of the 36-year-old Nevdzhin Shevket, a day care nurse, and her son Yeniz in Kardzhali. It was just Shevket's 17-year-old son Dzhuneyt who alerted authorities of the crime, by calling emergency medical service upon allegedly discovering his mother's body in the house.

The medics promptly informed the police, who turned up and found no evidence of forceful entry into the home. The dead body of the younger kid was discovered lying on the roof of the building. The father of the family was absent from the apartment, being at work at the time of the tragedy.

Several days later, friends, relatives and co-workers of the murdered woman demanded an apology from Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov.

They blamed the Minister for stating who the killer was before even the start of the due process and for talking publicly about the life of the family involved and of the murdered woman as unfit mother.

Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, announced on the same day the murder was discovered that the other son confessed murdering his mother and brother.

Tsvetanov said the reason for the murder has been long-lasting family drama and neglect of Dzhuneyt on the part of the mother, who strongly favored the younger boy.
