Bulgaria's president has praised VP Angel Marin for 'blazing a trail' in the short history of the institution, though he was largely the visible absence during the two terms they served.

Reservist officer Gen.Maj. Angel Marin joined on Tuesday the ranks of bearers of the Stara Planina – First Degree order, Bulgaria's highest state medal.

He was bestowed the state order by President Georgi Parvanov just ten days before the end of their second and last term.

"For me Angel Marin is one of the most important builders of the Bulgarian army for a very long period - from the sixties, when he began his education in the higher military school in Shumen up to the time when he commanded the missile troops," Parvanov said.

"Marin worked very precisely, to a degree of perfection," he added.

Parvanov said that over the last ten years the vice president has done more for the Bulgarians abroad than anyone, but refused to pad out his words with concrete facts and figures.

Marin may turn out to be the last Bulgarian public figure to receive the Stara Planina order by President Parvanov, who has been too generous in bestowing the highest medal during the last ten years.

According to the Bulgarian Presidency, Angel Marin is getting the Stara Planina order for his "extremely big contributions" to the Republic of Bulgaria.
