Sweden Acknowledges File-Sharing Religion

Not only is Internet piracy represented in Sweden's political system, the country has now officially granted religious status to the Church of Kopimism.

The Swedish Dagens Nyheter daily has described the movement as "the Internet pirates' own religion.

However, the church says it does not directly promote illegal file sharing, focusing instead on the open distribution of knowledge to all.

CTRL+C and CTRL+V are considered sacred symbols for the new church, whose followers believe that information is holy and copying is a sacrament.

It was Isak Gerson, philosophy student at the University of Uppsala, who founded the church – and he is also the self-appointed spiritual leader of the movement.

The "Kopimist" community has been registered at the same address as the Swedish Pirate Party's youth movement, but there are believed to be no other links between the two organizations.
