Bulgarian Mariana Kotseva, who is to be appointed deputy head of Eurostat, will have the task of increasing the professional independence of all member states' national statistical offices.

"After the Greek crisis that partially involved a release of incorrect statistical data, the independence of the statistical offices has become extremely important," Kotseva pointed out in an interview for the Bulgarian National Radio on Wednesday.

Kotseva revealed that amendments in EU's legislation will make it obligatory for the heads of the national statistical offices to have certain terms of office like it is in Bulgaria.

She admitted that tough challenges are ahead when it comes to producing high-quality statistical information in short terms, since the statistical data is becoming increasingly crucial in times of crisis.

Mariana Kotseva who is currently in charge of Bulgaria's National Statistical Institute reminded that she will become the highest-ranked Bulgarian EU official once she steps in office in April 2012.

At the end of 2011, Kotseva was selected as Deputy Chair of Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, among seven other bids for the post.
